On private trips through Nepal before the pandemic, Grit and Torsten Hoffmann got to know the mountain guide Jit Gurung and the travel agent Binod Magar (picture right). We were deeply saddened to learn that both of Jit’s parents had recently died as a result of a coronavirus infection, and that all the members of the Magar family were ill, some of them seriously. The people in the desperately poor country at the foot of the Himalayas have been left to almost fend for themselves in the pandemic. Medical care is very patchy, vaccination progress is minimal, and the incidence of infection is severe. Even though the number of infections is currently dropping, the medical sector will continue to face almost insurmountable challenges in the future.
Together with the medical service provider Praximed from Zwönitz/ Ore Mountains, we have put together a delivery of medical supplies, which includes masks as well as urgently needed oxygen pressure reducers and pulse and oxygen measuring devices. Distribution to more remote hospitals and infirmaries is being organized in cooperation with a local aid organization and the Magar family. More shipments are planned.
