Many of you will recognize this sentence, and you will hear it countless times over the next few days. It is the beginning of the Christmas story from Luke 2 in the Bible. Regardless of how we feel about the Christian message, few people are indifferent to Christmas. It marks a turning point in our annual cycle. This is a time when we do all those things that we don’t usually get around to during the hectic rest of the year and that we find ourselves missing. We invite family and friends over, buy gifts, cook, bake… and decorate. Björn Köhler’s not-so-new interpretation of the Christmas nativity scene – awarded the Design Award of the Association of Erzgebirge Craftsmen in 1995 – is, for us, probably the most beautiful representation of the Christmas story. Look how expressive the figures are, almost as if they were moving, even though the details are so minimal. Tradition meets modernity in its finest form (www.bjoern-koehler.de).
“… The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”
This is how the Christmas story ends, but in between there is room for many wonderful stories of you, your loved ones, and the time you spend together during the celebration of the birth of Christ.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas
